Free iSMS v1.02 is Available..better than ever!

Free iSMS has launched its latest version 1.02 replacing v1.01. I had used v1.01 before and v1.02 works like a charm and has fixed some bugs on version 1.01 as well as adding some new functions.

This so-call iPhone-style of SMS chat app designed for both s60v3 and s60v5 based phones. It supports for drag and drop, autostart, Scheduled SMS and Fake SMS. What I still like about it as it display the SMS in style of speech bubbles so we now what sms the previous sender sent to us. It can be easily sync with your Nokia SMS service.

Since this is unsigned apps, sign it with OPDA cert as usual, before you can used it. Enjoy!

SISContents Sign Application

SISContents is very useful and easy to use to sign your unsigned S60 application..It helps you to inspect the files contained in SIS package, to see certificates against which it was signed as well as to view the PKG script that describes the on-device installation process.

Here are some guide for noobs and new learner..:D

1. Download the software from this link.

2. Extract the file and you can run the apps by selecting extsis.exe file

3. It will prompt below screen.

4. Select Folder Icon to open desired UNSIGNED file.

5. Unsigned file will show like this. What I like about is that it shows when is the file expired so we will not be having certificate expired/error anymore..:)

6. Select Tools>Sign Package

7. It will prompt below windows..Choose key pairs tab. Browse your certificate and private key and create a profile so that you will not be required to key in your cert and private key everytime you need to sign an apps.

8. Go back to package tab, select signing profile you had created and select Add Signature.

9. Closed the windows and you be back to this windows showing that your apps had been signed successfully

10. Don't forget to "save as" you signed application.

There you go..step by step how to sign your apps..Later you just need to copy to your phone, and run the installer without any error..

GOOD LUCK!!

Garmin Mobile XT for Symbian S60 3rd Edition software version 5.00.40

One of my friend at work asking me about Garmin Mobile XT upgrade where he have it on this N82. Now I'm using version 5.00.30 and it works find. After searching on Garmin webpage, I just notice only a slight update for version 5.00.40. So to my opinion, not worth it to update yet until the next release, or major update. For 5800 XM users, we dont need photo viewer. So why bother to update.

Changes made from version 5.00.30 to 5.00.40:

  • Provide location format selection for coordinates.
  • Correct picture viewer to show multiple photos in Travel Guide.

But for anyone thinking to update, you can download the installer at this link.

How to save my 5800 XM battery life....

It's been a while since my last post..caught up with work...so here goes...

A lot of cellphone enthusiast actually try to find a phone that can last them for days before they run out of battery rather then only can last for a day. Since I bought my 5800 XM, 2 of my colleague bought the same phone just few weeks ago. One of my colleague complaining that the battery only last for a day. Well, here are some tips I discover and want to share with all of 5800 users. We can't expect to much on this phone as it has TFT screen with 16M colors with 3.2" wide screen. More than we can bargain for right?

I know you will find a lot of forums on this topics, but I would like to jot down using my experience on saving my battery..

1. Fully charge you battery everyday..:)
Easiest thing, if you are afraid of running out of battery, always make sure that your 5800 battery is fully charge all the time. If you are on the go, just bring extra battery or using those "wireless" charger available in Malaysia. But don't worry about draining your battery out till it's last drop before charging it, as lithium battery can handle to be charge anytime.

2. Don't switch off your phone.
When you switch off and boot up your phone, it drain your battery faster. I had experience this before where I switch off my phone as the place I go do not have any telco coverage, hoping to save battery. It the end, I end up using my phone less than 2 days. Everytime you off and boot up your phone, it used the most power from your battery. So nowadays, I just put on offline mode if no telco coverage. When offline mode, your battery can last longer.

3. Used GSM instead of Dual Mode.
I had tried this option this week and after 2 days, my battery still showing 5 bar. I had used calling aggresively ( 30+30 minutes talking with my gf), heavy sms, phone torch, playing games, etc..To change the options, select Settings> Connectivity>Network>Network Mode>GSM..

4. Wifi/Bluetooth to be switch off
Make sure your bluetooth and wifi connection are closed. For wifi connection, make sure your "Shows WLAN availability" is set to Never so it will never scan and wireless available and drain your battery out.

5. Setting your display light at the minimum
It will be a bit inconvenient to see when you are in direct sunlight, but at least it will save and prolong your battery life..:)
To set go to Settings>Phone> Display>Light Sensor>Minimum. And also set you Light time-out as minimum as possible. I set it to 15 seconds.

6. Will update more later..since I so sleepy...:D

Nokia 5800 comes in Silver Special Edition

Nokia recently come out with Silver band for their 5800 XM. Not much different with their previous black, red and blue edition. It does look more to white.

Here are some pictures attached courtesy of SymbianWorld.com

"The Silver Nokia 5800 changes the colour of the exterior colour band around the circumference of the casing from the red and blue of the previous models to a new silver finish, the overall casing colour stays as black which offsets the new silver banding perfectly.

Aside from this colour change the bones of the Nokia 5800 stay exactly the same offering all of the same great features and technology as the original red and more recent blue editions."

Next Generation Nokia 5800 XM with capacitive touch panels?

Nokia plans to replace the resistive touch panel currently used in its 5800 handset with a capacitive touch panel in order to compete effectively with rival models from Apple, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, according to sources at Taiwan handset component suppliers.

Nokia's initial orders for capacitive touch panels will be enough for the production of two million 5800 handsets, with shipments of the new version to begin in May-June, indicated the sources, who are familiar with Nokia's roadmap.

Thanks to 5800's product design and adequate pricing strategy, sales of the 5800 have reached three million units so far since the device was launched in November 2008, the sources revealed.

Following the expected availability of the N97 in the second quarter, Nokia is also expected to roll out more models with capacitive touch panels, including ultra-thin and QWERTY versions.

From what I see, the pricing for the capacitive touch panels Nokia phone will be slightly pricey since the technology had been adapted to most of the high-end phone. But the price will be always lower that it's competitor as Nokia able to lower down their pricing for any phone they introduce for some reasons.

So are buyer eager to wait for this coming May-June 09 time frame for the next generation capacitive touch panels on Nokia phone? This is just a plan by Nokia, but from my thought, the resistive touch panel works fine on my Nokia 5800 XM....and if they do release this capacitive touch panel, it will be in Europe first rather than Asia..

The Correct Number: Nokia 5800 XM Sales Reach 3 million Devices

Before, I had post that 5800 XM had sold more than 13 million unit for the pass 6 months, but I overlook the news and have a news update from Nokia saying that they sold 3 million unit so far.
Well, the numbers will increase drastically as here in Malaysia, the price is dropping and more and more people are tempted with this phone as a lot of S60v5 software out there for download.

Will keep you guys posted in my next post........

"According to Reuters' Tarmo Virki and Nokia's first quarter sales results, Finnish mobile phone giant has sold over 2.6 million units during the first quarter, with cumulative shipments of more than 3 million units since the Smartphone’s launch in late November 2008 which totally beats the company's self-imposed target of 1 million devices!

Sure, this is not even nearly as good as the whooping 13 millions of devices reported yesterday, but it is still very respectable score for company’s first mass market full touchscreen device.

The Nokia 5800 has clearly been a big success and may well prove to be Nokia's biggest profit driver in the first half of 2009," Nomura analyst Stuart Jeffrey said for Reuters yesterday.

Analyst Tero Kuittinen from GC Capital said Nokia could ship more than 2.5 million 5800s in the January-March quarter, matching rough estimates for iPhone shipment volumes.

"Outside the US market, it is emerging as 'the poor man's iPhone' - a device with clunky and old-fashioned software, but much cheaper price, better camera quality, lower weight and far superior stand-by time," he said.

"In New York or London, consumers do not mind the bad voice quality and battery problems of the iPhone. In Jakarta or Moscow, consumers are far more performance- and value-oriented," Kuittinen said.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has seen successful sales starts in a number of markets, including Spain, India, Hong Kong, Thailand, Finland and especially Russia in November, with other territories including the UK, Singapore, Australia and the US couple of weeks ago.

"The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has been received very positively and this milestone is just further proof that people all over the world want a device that is not only a great music experience, but also makes the most of touch screen technology," said Jo Harlow, Vice President, Nokia.

Disabling Camera Shutter Sound in your Nokia 5800 XM

Most of the cell phone company have specifically designed their camera phone application to enable shutter sound even we silent our phone. This has something to do with most of the privacy laws to protect unwanted photos to be taken secretly. But surprisingly, my old SE K750i able to off the shutter sound during silent mode.

Actually there are pro and cons for this function. In certain event, we need to shut off our shutter sound. Taking a picture of our baby sleeping, or a quick shot in holy places, or to capture the moment of silence..So if we think positive, not all people taking picture without shutter sound can be label as a pervert.

So this simple apps is develop so you are able to shut off your 5800 XM camera shutter sound. Just follow the steps bellow:

1. Download this apps at this link
2. Sign the apps with your developer certificate.
(Refer to my previous post on how to obtain OPDA cert)
3. Copy and install the apps in your phone.
4. Reboot/restart your phone.
5. Go to profile and set "Warning tone" to "Off"
6. Finally, you can enjoy taking a picture without the camera shutter sound. To enable back the shutter sound, just set back your "Warning tone" to "On"
7. ENJOY!

p/s: Please don't misuse this function and please used it responsibly.

How to get OPDA certificate for your Nokia 5800 XM?

Many people that already purchase their Nokia 5800 XM probably demanding for more application to be installed to their Symbian 60v5 phone. Symbian OS offers a lot of exciting 3rd party applications for daily used but most of the new users having problem with getting their application signs.

Most of us getting certificate error, unable to sign using Symbian Signed. I found a great person that willing to help provide me OPDA certificate with 17 capabilities to sign your application. Just used the certificate and key to sign your unsigned apps one by one.

So far I had tried a lot of sites to seek for my 17 capabilites certificate (dev cert), finally I found mobilemania.com and register as a user. You just need to post your phone imei number to their admin, and just wait for 2-3 days to received your OPDA certificate.
You can used any sign application to upload your certificate and sign your apps. I fully recommend below software to sign your apps (SISContent). You can just google it.

"SISContents is a tool that allows you to unpack, edit and sign Symbian 9 SIS packages (Nokia S60 3rd, 5th Edition and Sony Ericsson UIQ 3.x platforms are supported). It helps you to inspect the files contained in SIS packages, to see certificates against which it was signed as well as to view the PKG script that describes the on-device installation process. You can also edit the contents of packages and sign them after that."

Nokia 5800 XM vs iPhone 3G in Malaysia

Since Nokia 5800 XM becoming one of the hottest phone in the market, probably team of developers trying to develop more and more applications and games for this phone. This phone has a good price tag ( in Malaysia roughly cost only RM1400 for Zitron set, RM1250 for AP). This price really kill all touch screen PDA phone as 5800 XM offers GPS, WIFI, 3G and much more compare to some PDA phone doesnt offers GPS compatible.

Since Maxis is the first service provider in Malaysia to introduce iPhone 3G but suprisingly the lowest pricing for iPhone they can offer for RM100 package is RM1900. Comparing in United States, AT&T offers USD299 for a normal package.

Seeing bad economy downturn, Malaysian will still spend their money on iPhone but more people probably will go for 5800 XM since Nokia has a lot to offer. iPhone just a fancy phone with nice designs but lack of daily function used by most of the people. Even my sister in Las Vegas regret buying iPhone and continue using her Dopod (now known as HTC)

Probably I would like to list down major differences between this 2 hot gadget (iphone vs 5800 XM) now in Malaysia.

1. First of all, Nokia is a leading company in cell phones and had been in the cell phone business for many years. Apple had just starting with their first phone namely iphone and not have much experience in cellphone business.

2. The pricing between this two cell phones are like heaven and earth. You can buy 2 unit of 5800 XM for a price of 1 iPhone. I can say that in Malaysia, they really burn a hole in people's pocket. Without contract with Maxis, some shop and individual can sell iPhone up to RM3099 for 16GB model. For a phone that had less function, iPhone is overpricing.

3. The dimension for the iPhone is very big compare to 5800 XM. IPhone size (115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm) and 5800 XM (111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm, 83 cc ) making 5800 XM fits perfectly on our palm rather than oversize iPhone. Most people in Malaysia like to have compact phone compare to bigger size. Even 5800 XM weight is lighter than the iPhone ( 109g vs 133g). From my opinion, 5800 XM probably the lightest touch screen phone ever built with 3.2 inches screen

4. For connectivity, it really disappoint me that iPhone unable to use it's bluetooth to transfer files. I start using my first bluetooth phone (SE K750i), I probably used bluetooth FTP all the time. What I can say that we can't keep bringing our cable in our pockets just to transfer picture or data file. That's what bluetooth is for. (5800 XM can used bluetooth for FTP)

5. From my suprise also is that iPhone doesn't support Multimedia Messaging System (MMS)!!. In Malaysia, we don't have wireless internet connection in all the places. So we need MMS to sent picture to our friends or love ones. So without this function, I can say even RM500 phone can sent MMS..For messaging, 5800 XM come with alphanumeric keypad, make it easy for new users that upgrade thier normal phone keypad phone to a touch screen phone.

6. I agree that iPhone probably has the fastest 3G connection now. But in Malaysia, not all places have 3G coverage. But what is 3G without 3G video call? For internet connection, we can still used wireless connection, but we can't used internet connection for video call. At first, I thought iPhone coming out with iPhone 3G, with 3G call. But the door slam right at me. Apple really should introduce 3G call instead. (5800 XM can used 3G for internet and video call)

7. GPS mode. Not sure how iPhone works with it's google map, but for 5800 XM, you can install garmin map and the GPS function really one of the best I had ever since. Very user friendly, with free update map for Malaysia and Singapore.

8. If your batter fail on 5800 XM, you can always buy a new one to replace it. iPhone had a built-in battery and probably you need to sent your phone to Apple service center to get it replace and I heard the pricing for the battery really cost a fortune.

9.The missing part of the iPhone is the FM Radio. 5800 XM offers RDS Radio compatible.

10. Most important part is we probably have a lot of Service Center for Nokia around Malaysia, and very little Apple service centers are assign for iPhone. Probably will be more in the future.

So all gadgets lovers in Malaysia should choose wisely. If they able to afford more expensive gadget even with less functions, get the iPhone. Choose the Nokie 5800 XM for more functionality and cheaper price..

Garmin on Nokia 5800 XM

Just got my Nokia 5800XM a couple month ago, and now I'm downloading S60v5 apps like crazy. First time I bought this phone(Feb28th 09), people had bad comment about it at GSM Arena. Most of the people commented probably never even buy this phone. So far, this phone rocks and better still ..more and more apps been developed for Symbian 60 V5.

My first software installed on my 5800XM is Garmin Mobile XT. You can google Garmin XT for 5800, and it works like a charm!.. I never get lost again..!!
For Malaysian and Singaporean, you can always update your maps by becoming a member of www.malfreemaps.com. The map's developers are very genius team and making navigation using your 5800 XM without any hassle. With lots of POI (Point of Interest), you can even get night market map and which day it's operate!!!...

Current version for Garmin Mobile XT is 5.00.4..but mind is 5.00.3 since I heard more problem on 5.00.4..So I suggest to stick with 5.00.3.

To anyone planning to buy this phone, please do. You will not regret. Make sure the phone you buy come with upgraded software v20 as it's a major firmware upgrade by Nokia where it support secondary camera photo-taking, geo-tagging, more responsive touch screen and much more. The downside of it just it eat's up a little chunk of your RAM.

So happy buying for anyone interested with Nokia 5800 XM

p/s: proof showing that 5800 build for tough users..:))
